New York is 12-33 in its last 45 contests...The Mets have gone 15 straight series without a series victory dating to their sweep of Arizona from May 18-20 at Citi Field...The 54 losses by the Mets prior to the All-Star break are their highest total since losing 60 games before the break in 1993.
AT HOME: New York is 3-5 on their season-high 11-game homestand...The Mets have lost 20 of their last 25 home games... New York is 17-31 at home this year.
ADDITIONAL WALK-OFF NOTE: Each of the Mets’ last four home wins have come in their final at-bat, with the last three of those on walk-off home runs...According to Elias, the Mets have tied a major league record (done 10 other times) with each of their last three home wins coming on a walk-off home run (José Bautista, WIlmer Flores and Brandon Nimmo)...The Mets had one other streak like that, from May 31-June 4, 1988 (Kevin Elster; Howard Johnson and Kevin McReynolds), which was the second such instance in major league history; the Cubs did it first, in April 1961...In addition, over the last three seasons, no other major league team has had four straight home wins come in the bottom of the final inning...The only other times the Mets have produced four consecutive home wins on walk-offs were in 1962 and 1983.

HE'S BACK: Syndergaard tonight makes his 12th start of the season and his first since May 25 at Milwaukee...Was activated from the 10-Day Disabled List prior to tonight's start after straining a ligament in his right index finger...Was his second trip to the DL in his career (also, last year's partial tear in his right lat)...Made one rehab start with Single-A Brooklyn on July 8, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing one run, earned, on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk...Threw 71 pitches in that rehabilitation outing.
LAST MLB START: Pitched his second-straight quality start, his sixth in his last seven outings, on May 25 at Milwaukee...Allowed three runs, earned, on six hits while fanning eight and walking none...Was his fourth game this season with at least six strikeouts and no walks, tied for the fifth-most such games in the majors this year.
VS. WASHINGTON: Has lost four-straight decisions against the Nationals after winning his first two against Washington...Has completed at least 7.0 innings in five of his 10-career starts against the club...Last started against the Nats on September 23 of last season as he worked his way back from a partial tear of his right lat, pitching 1.0 scoreless inning in his first start in nearly five months...Is 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in six starts against the club at home.
SYN-CITI: Syndergaard tonight makes his eighth home start of the season...Has won each of his last two home starts and is 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA (14 earned runs/39.1 innings) overall in seven starts at Citi Field this season with 50 punchouts and 11 walks...The Mets are 5-2 in those seven starts...Has yielded three or fewer earned runs in 26 of his last 29 home starts...Owns a 2.68 ERA (72 earned runs/241.2 innings) in 40 games (39 starts) at Citi Field, the second-lowest ERA among all pitchers with at least 120.0 innings pitched at the ballpark, trailing only staffmate Jacob deGrom and his 2.21 ERA at home.
RECENT SYNDERGAARD: Has not allowed more than three runs in each of his last 10 starts since surrendering four runs in his Opening Day win and has pitched at least 5.0 innings in his last nine outings...Among current NL starters, only Jacob deGrom (16) has a longer active streak of starts with no more than three runs allowed...Is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA (16 earned runs/54.2 innings) in his last nine starts.
APPROACHING A MILESTONE: Syndergaard is six punchouts away from career strikeout number 500...The fastest Mets pitcher to 500 strikeouts (by innings pitched) is Dwight Gooden, who fanned his first 500 batters in 445.1 innings... Syndergaard has thrown 428.2-career innings in the regular season...Only five Mets pitchers have reached the mark before their 26th birthday (Syndergaard turns 26 on August 29), they are: Dwight Gooden (1,391 strikeouts before turning 26), Tom Seaver (866), Sid Fernandez (765) Jon Matlack (747) and Gary Gentry (563)...WIth Syndergaard's final strikeout of his last outing, he surpassed Nolan Ryan's 493 punchouts before turning 26.
HE'S AN AVENGER: The Mets 14-5 in their last 19 games when Syndergaard starts after a team loss (.737 win percentage)...In those 19 starts, Syndergaard is 8-3 with a 2.43 ERA (32 earned runs/118.1 innings) and 141 strikeouts.
IN ELITE COMPANY: Syndergaard is one of only four active major league hurlers with at least 70 career starts to sport a sub-3.00 ERA...His 2.92 career ERA (139 earned runs/428.2 innings) trails only Clayton Kershaw's 2.37 career ERA, staffmate Jacob deGrom's 2.78 career ERA and (by decimal points) Chris Sale's 2.92 ERA...Ranks third in the NL in strikeout-to-walk ratio since 2015 (5.49 SO/BB), topped only by Kershaw (7.76) and Max Scherzer (5.64).
JULY IS HIS HOTTEST MONTH: Has a 1.85 ERA (13 earned runs/63.1 innings) in 10-career July starts, the lowest ERA in a single calendar month in his career... That is the third-lowest July ERA among active pitchers since 2015, trailing Clayton Kershaw (0.64) and Zack Greinke (1.73)...Has allowed more than two earned runs once in his 10 July outings...Tonight's start marks his first start in July since 2016.
TOMORROW'S STARTER: RHP ZACK WHEELER (2-6, 4.42)
PREVIOUS START: Threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs, earned, on seven hits in the Mets' 4-3, extra-inning victory over the Phillies while walking three and fanning eight...Did not complete at least 5.0 innings for the first time since May 16 vs. Toronto and for the third time overall this year.
AT CITI: The Mets won Wheeler's last home start, snapping a season-opening eight-game losing streak when he started at Citi Field...That is the longest such streak to begin a season in team history...Is 0-2 in his last six home starts despite posting a 2.39 ERA (10 earned runs/37.2 innings) in that span...Overall, Wheeler is 0-5 with a 4.53 ERA (27 earned runs/53.2 innings) in nine starts at home in 2018.
