Mets adding Grote and Mays patches to jerseys

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 29, 2024 — The New York Mets today announced the club has added memorial uniform patches honoring the lives of Jerry Grote and Willie Mays. The patches will be debut prior to today’s 4:10 p.m. game vs. Houston.

Grote’s family will be on hand today at Citi Field to celebrate his career and available in the press conference room following Carlos Mendoza’s availability at 1:30 p.m.

“It has been a tough year for our Mets family,” said Steve and Alex Cohen. “We’ve lost two Mets Hall of Famers in Buddy Harrelson and Jerry Grote and the great Willie Mays. Jerry was the best defensive catcher in the history of our organization and guided the incredible 1969 pitching staff. We were honored to fulfill Joan Payson’s promise to retire Willie’s number on Old Timers’ Day a few years ago and make sure he has a permanent home in New York.”

Grote passed away at 81 earlier this year. Grote was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1992 after catching 12 years (1966–1977) for the team. He was a two-time All-Star and anchored the 1969 world champion pitching staff. Grote led NL catchers in fielding percentage in 1975 and caught more games (1,176) than anyone else in franchise history.

“It means so much to the Grote family that the Mets are remembering Jerry’s legacy,” said his wife Cheryl and son Jeff. “Jerry still has so many fans in New York and it makes us proud that what he did for the organization will not be forgotten.”

Mays passed away at age 93 on June 18. The Mets retired Mays’ #24 on August 27, 2022. Mays, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, spent the final two years of his illustrious career with the Mets (1972–1973). His final home run, the 660th of his career, came on August 17, 1973 vs. Cincinnati at Shea Stadium. He was 24-time All-Star, two-time MVP and earned 12 Gold Gloves.

“Putting the patch on the uniform is another clear indication by the Mets that they appreciated and valued the contributions my dad made to the organization and for that matter to New York City,” said Willie’s son, Michael Mays. “For my father, coming back to the Mets was coming back to where it all started. He was coming home. I want to thank Alex and Steve Cohen for honoring the pledge that Joan Payson made to retire his number. That meant a great deal to him and our family. Let’s Go Mets.”

Fun time at the Mets game.

I was able to attend my first Subway Series game in a few years and I have to say it was pretty crazy last night. I’m not going to pontificate about this game as much as I’m going to talk about the feel of the crowd versus the beginning of the season. I’ve attended a handful of games this season and it went from being a boring non event with an unlikeable team to a buzz and electric crowd last night. The Mets went from being a team where as fans we figured they were going to get trounced by the Yankees three weeks ago to a fun team to watch. Call me crazy but having Alvarez back and Vientos in the lineup had been the difference maker. I really don’t remember the last time in the past couple seasons that the Mets fans were this hyped up and the team wasn’t boring. They finally found the umph!

When Alvarez got hurt I said in the comments on Til Mets D Us Part podcast(go to your fav podcast service or on YouTube and look them up)  that the Mets were in trouble until he gets back. I hate to say I told you so but……

Anyway it was fun last night. The crowd was exciting. The Mets won and it was just a great time. What a difference from the start of the season.

The Mets Pod also did a live broadcast from the front of Citi Field. Connor and Joe do a great job. You guys should look them up too.

Mets 2024 Mets MLB All Star Game Caps

You can find these caps on

I don’t like the white work out cap. Looks super generic to me and I know I won’t buy it.

The black base cap reminds me of the end tag of the old NBC “the more you know” graphic from one of the moral/info rags from Saturday morning tv. Look it up, you’ll see what I mean.

Update: Hey @mets. Puerto Rico ID isn’t considered valid?

Puerto Rico ID isn’t a legal form of ID Mets? Just looked it up here.

Yes, Puerto Rican driver's licenses are valid forms of identification in the United States because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says Puerto Rican-issued IDs are REAL ID compliant, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also accepts them.

So Mets, do you guys accept Puerto Rico’s ID?

Update: looks like someone had to be told that it’s acceptable.

No bids on lesson with Alonso

Remember when this would have been a hot ticket item to try to win? Now, is no bids being made yet because the love for Pete Alonso isn’t there anymore? Or is it the fact that the reserve is too high to open with? I think if the reserve was at $1500 that you would get some bids. I know it’s for charity but it seems since the Cohen’s took over the game used stuff and the Amazon Foundation that they try to get the big numbers but are also pricing out the fans.

Anyway this is what you get-

Hit it out of the ballpark with this Amazin' experience! This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity includes a private hitting lesson for one person with Mets First Baseman and two-time Home Run Derby Champion, Pete Alonso! The 30-minute lesson will take place before a mutually agreeable home game in 2024. This experience will include four Field Level tickets to an agreed upon game. The hitting lesson participant must be between 8-18 years of age. The Mets will reach out to the winning bidder at the close of the auction with all necessary details regarding this experience. Fifty percent of the proceeds for this item will benefit the Amazin' Mets Foundation and the other half will benefit Pete Alonso's Foundation.

Update:Mets Summer Parking Discount.🤑

Take advantage of discounted parking at Citi Field this summer – reduced to only $20 per car.

The discounted parking rate applies to Monday through Thursday Mets home games from Tuesday, June 11 through Thursday, August 15, excluding the Subway Series (June 25 and June 26).

Please note the following restrictions:

  • The regular parking rate of $40 per car applies for all Friday through Sunday games.
  • The parking rate for bus parking remains the same at the rate of $80.
  • This limited time promotion does not apply to the games against the Yankees on June 25 and 26.
  • Other terms and restrictions may apply.

This is interesting to me on various fronts. A) are the folks that pre purchased there parking passes as part of their ticket plans for during the week getting credits or refunds?B) does this show that the parking prices don’t have to be that high at $40 to begin with? C) how bad are the ticket sales during the week that the Mets are pushing this as a promotion?

Folks please don’t fall for this as the Mets trying to be fan friendly right now. In my humble opinion it seems to me that the folks that are in charge of the venue operations are starting to panic and see that the “fan frien…” Sorry.  I couldn’t get that out with a straight face. They are starting to see the fan unfriendly moves that they have made coupled with a team that is unlikeable/unwatchable is backfiring on them and they have to rethink their attack plan to separate you from your money.

Updated. Was just sent this about the planholder parking rates.

Bid to sit with Steve Cohen

Win a chance to watch a Mets home game with Owner Steve Cohen in his Suite! You and three guests will have the opportunity to sit in the Ownership Suite to cheer on the Mets at a mutually agreeable home game in the 2024 season! The Mets will reach out to the winning bidder at the close of the auction. All the net proceeds from this item will go to the Amazin' Mets Foundation.

You can go Here  to bid. It’s at over $6000 dollars right now.

I wonder what the people who win this auction might say at the game. Will the be fans or will the be “Mets” fans? You know what I mean.
