Some of my fellow Mets fans who are I consider some of my closest friends are going to disagree with me on this BIG TIME. I don't think Gary Carter's number 8 deserves to be retired. Was Carter a solid player for teams he played for and deserved to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame? Yes. Did he have three solid maybe even above average years with the Mets? Yes. Should he be in the Mets Hall of Fame? Yes. Should his number be retired? No. Now hear me out. The retiring of numbers is getting out of control. The Mets pretty soon are going to have to have emojis instead of numbers at this point if they keep retiring numbers.
I propose maybe something that I think might be a sufficient tribute instead to Carter instead of having his number retired. How about a statue of Gary across from Seaver looking like he is catching a pitch from Tom Terrific. I think that is something that might even be better than a number being retired.
All this outrage over someone wearing the number 8 seems so overblown. I sometimes feel folks just like to rage just to rage and they rage over stuff that is more of emotion than reality.
Enough with the retired numbers for a while. Thanks.
