On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig stood in front of fans and his teammates at Yankee Stadium to deliver his farewell to baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. Immediately recognized as a monumental moment of baseball and American history, Gehrig’s speech represents the ultimate triumph of personal character and the human spirit.

In commemoration of the first annual Lou Gehrig Day, Candy is proud to release two unique and never to be recreated digital collectibles commemorating Lou Gehrig and his historic speech.

The first collectible is a single edition (1 of 1) featuring a bust of Lou Gehrig in an iron finish, representing his legacy as baseball’s “Iron Horse.” The bust includes authentic details including the Baseball Centennial patch on his uniform and the iconic bend of Gehrig’s hat. Behind the bust, video of the speech will play as Gehrig’s words echo through Yankee Stadium.

The second collectible is a limited edition (1 of 100) featuring the bust completed in a bronze finish with audio of the iconic speech playing in the background. These 100 pieces will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Candy partnered with the digital creative studio Ayzenberg over eight weeks to design these one of a kind collectibles.All proceeds, net of third-party administrative, minting and platform expenses, will be distributed to The Lou Gehrig Society, The Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS at Mass General, and The ALS Association, and any amounts that may be paid in the future to MLB Advanced Media and/or Candy that are attributable to subsequent sales of the NFTs will be distributed to Major League Baseball Charities, Inc.

Willets Pt. three-year remediation begins

I keep seeing this stuff sliding by and not getting any pickup.

From the Queens Chronicle on June 24th then updated on July 1st. 

 The remediation phase targets six of the development’s 23 acres. The environmental cleanup will remove the contaminated soil and replace it with clean fill.

The site is enrolled in the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Brownfield Cleanup Program because of the soil’s toxicity levels, suffered as a result of decades of petroleum contamination. Its remediation will continue until 2023.

The plan moved forward with skepticism from the district’s community board. CB 7’s Environmental Chairperson James Cervino submitted a March 29 letter to the DEC calling the plan “shocking” because of the members’ belief contaminants could still find their way onto the school site.

Cervino had pointed to the draft Remedial Action Work Plan from the DEC, which stated that “17 of the 25 leading edge particles that eventually cross the site’s northern boundary flow through a smaller area of it.”

So with the environmental remediation ending in 2023, when does the work building the schools and affordable housing begin?

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 2, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced the team has acquired left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda from San Francisco in exchange for minor league infielder Will Toffey. Banda will report to Syracuse (AAA).

 

Banda, 27, has pitched in parts of four major league seasons for Arizona (2017) and Tampa Bay (2018-2020), posting a 4-3 record and a 5.96 ERA (34 earned runs/51.1 innings) in 18 games (five starts). He has spent the entire 2021 season with Sacramento (AAA), going 3-2 with a 6.86 ERA (30 earned runs/39.1 innings). In 161 career minor league games (134 starts), the southpaw is 49-43 with a 4.05 ERA (342 earned runs/759.1 innings).

 

Banda was the Brewers’ 10^th-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and spent the first three seasons of his pro career in Milwaukee’s system before being traded to Arizona in 2015. He made his major league debut with the D-backs in 2017 and was dealt to Tampa Bay in 2018. He was acquired by the Giants at the trade deadline last season.

 

Toffey, 26, was acquired by the Mets in 2018 in a trade with Oakland for right-hander Jeurys Familia. He was batting .178 (18-101) with six home runs in 34 games for Binghamton (AA) this season.
