Star Trek III Holds Up Well

After I finished with the abomination that is Star Trek V I decided to watch Star Trek III for the first time in a long time.  It holds up well.
For one, Shatner and Nimoy both look 50ish as opposed to the 60ish they do in 5, and although DeForest Kelley is starting to look old, it works for where the character is mentally in this film.  Jimmy Doohan still looks like "movie Scotty" too and gets lots to do in this one, as he will in IV.

The Enterprise seems more scarred than it did when Khan was finished with it, and Robin Curtis as Saavik is awful, and a character-killer.  (Saavik will get about 3 minutes of screen time in IV.)

Sure it's annoying that Admiral Morrow says the Enterprise is "20" years old - maybe since the Gary Mitchell-era paintjob (when they painted the railings red and removed the gooseneck speaker things) but it's clearly more like 40.   However, the stealing of the Enterprise is fun and Christopher Lloyd and crew behave like real Klingons, not the mumbo-jumbo philosophical versions that we saw 78 years later hanging out with Picard.

The special effects are quite good...watching this film made me realize even more (if this is possible) that Star Trek V is a piece of crap.

Star Trek V Is Still A Piece Of Crap

Decided to watch Star Trek V last night. Awful.

Suddenly Captain Kirk is a super freestyle mountain climber who can scale mountains with no equipment.

Whoever did Nimoy's makeup doesn't know what Spock looks like. Both his ears and eyebrows look wrong.

Spock suddenly has a brother. Oh yeah he just never mentioned it.

Scotty and Uhura are dating now that they are in their 60s. Doohan must have been getting old or forgot how to act. His Scotty is like a parody.

DeForest Kelley also looks very old in this one...his McCoy is also likea McCoy parody.

Why does Kirk keep leaving Chekov in charge when Sulu is sitting right there? Why isn't Sulu off captaining the Excelsior yet?

The center of the galaxy is apparently an hour and fifteen minutes from Earth...or did Kirk and crew spend several weeks in the brig that the director (Shatner) just doesn't show us.

What a terrible film. Thank goodness Star Trek VI ended the TOS movie series on a good note.

Was Watching Star Trek: Wrath of Khan

With tomorrow being the 27th anniversary of the release of Wrath of Khan I thought I'd revisit the film.
1.  Kirk is a douche.  Walks into inspection and hands uhura his book to carry like she's some dumb broad

2.  Kirk is a self-centered douche.   Peter Preston lays there dying and...

Scotty: he stayed at his post.....
Kirk: yeah whatever can you fix the engines
(Boop) spock here - the engines are working (which will be important later). I guess someone other than scotty fixed them
Kirk: later dudes...I'm outta here
Scotty stands there stunned.

3.  Engines are out. Why does Spock go downstairs?  What happened to the genius who fixed them before?

4.  Why does everyone keep leaving saavik in command.  Sulu and Uhura are both commanders and sitting right there.  When they come back from Regula and walk on the bridge the blonde kid is sitting in center seat

5.  Kirk doesn't trust the blonde kid who is normally at weapons. He has sulu fire phasers the entire movie until the end where chekov asks to take the weapons spot - kicks out blondie and now kirk takes the firing job away from sulu

6.  When you are dying on the other side of the partition please don't just randomly repeat things from our meeting earlier in the week

7.  Kirk is a jerkk and calls Spock "human" at his funeral.  He clearly wanted to be less human.  Thanks jerk.

8.  This movie needs st1 to not exist.  Why would kirk take an admirals job the second time?  Let's be sure to reuse all those expensive shots we made of the enterprise for the first movie.

Star Trek Movie has Cool Callbacks (Spoilers)

One of my favorite things about the new Star Trek movie is the callbacks to previous films and episodes. All are done in a subtle way, not in the George Lucas way.

SPOILERS

From memory

Star Trek VI: the Klingon blood globules are emulated by the way the red matter appears.

Star Trek V: thankfully nothing

Star Trek IV: The Romulan Wessles joke is remembered when Checkov tries to work the intercraft, also Spock giving Scotty a formula that he invented in another timeline.

Star Trek III/VI/Generations: Kirk often finds himself hanging off a cliff.

Star Trek II: the Kobayaski Maru, and Kirk's eating an apple.

Star Trek I: Admiral Pike's uniform

The Cage: Pike's wheelchair

Where No Man: a planet named Delta Vega

Also I liked seeing Admiral James Komack.

Star Trek Looks Awesome

I really think they nailed this movie. I'm shocked but tremendously excited.

I've watched this clip 50 times.

Worst Klingon Ever

Really?

How could they have that good special effects and that bad of a Klingon head?
