I was in the chat section of the Til Mets Do Us Part YouTube channel during Whiskey Walk off and I mentioned that I am loving the fact the Mets fans that thought Steve Cohen was altruistic and was just going to put his money into the team and buy championships were finally seeing who Steve Cohen really is. Steve Cohen is a shark. He is going to do shark things. How do you think he became a billionaire?
I am also on record saying that I am anti casino. I haven't wavered on that but I am also a realist. I am a realist from the beginning about Cohen. When every one was like "Uncle Steve" this and "Uncle Steve" that and "Uncle Steve" is going to just keep pumping money into a losing venture because he loves the fans. NO. Steve Cohen is going to going to do what I feel is his biggest thrill in life, doing what others can't do. "All he wanted was the casino and he really doesn't care about the Mets!!!" Nope. You are partly right. Cohen wanted the Mets to own a baseball team. They are not too many people these days that can own a pro sports team on their own and without a consortium. Now he's done that. Don't forget, he almost bought the Dodgers years ago but was shot down by MLB owners. Did Cohen have eyes on the land around Citi Field for development? Hell yeah he did. Did he always plan on a casino? I don't think that was it but he def saw he could make money on it. There was a clause in the lease (for 99 years with the city) that only the owners of the Mets could build on the parkland Citi Field is placed on. The casino part of the land fell into his lap. How many of you remember Steve was a minority owner of the Mets while the Wilpons owned the team? Do you guys remember when Sterling Equities AKA the Wilpons real estate development company wanted to put two, that's right TWO malls by Citi Field? The one across the street by the chop shops and the one in the parking lots of Citi Field? No? Go look it up. This is where I feel "Uncle Steve" came up with the idea to build in the parking lots next to Citi Field. Again. Shark move.
"Look what I could do that other business men couldn't do? I was able to get the NYC government to go along with my plan and that shows power"- What a shark might say.
I am not knocking Steve Cohen on doing what he's doing as a Mets owner. I'm knocking him on saying that the area needed more greenery, more restaurants, more shops, live event venue, etc. I was all for that the area needs a facelift. I also can/can't believe how many folks in NYC had no idea that the casino plan was all to be put into the parking lots and not where the Wilpons are building across the street.
In the world of TV Shows and Movies reboots, what is going on with the Mets right now, is a reboot. The team was basically the DCEU got dropped and now is resetting to be the DCU. Steve Cohen is making business decisions to make the team profitable and into a winner. The emotional connection to players by fans do not factor into his plans. Cohen doesn't care about that. He cares about results like most Billionaires are know to do. I warned you folks that were all "Uncle Steve" that when the reality of Steve Cohen hits, you were all going to hate it. I am enjoying the reality check right now.
With all that being said, am I missing the days of the Wilpons ownership? Absolutely not. Do I believe that the Cohen regime is going to try its best to get close to if not win a World Series? I do. Why do I think that? He'll be the owner that brought the first championship to Flushing in over forty years,
Welcome to reality folks.
