" The Army, a diverse mix of white, Black, Asian and Latino fans, has been going strong for 13 years. Like any big, boisterous clan, there are occasional temper flare-ups, but its members have forged friendships so intimate that they’ve walked in each other’s wedding parties and attended funerals for departed relatives. They’ve yet to cheer their beloved Mets to a World Series title, but the group’s existence has led to countless connections, including quite a few love matches.

It all started when one depressed die-hard closed out a very typical New York Mets season by printing a snarky T-shirt.

The 2009 New York Mets season ended like so many others in the franchise’s history: with bitter disappointment. What made that year’s letdown particularly mournful was that it was the team’s first in its shiny new ballpark, Citi Field. The franchise and its fans had hoped for better results in their new $900 million digs. But their star players were starting to show their age, suffering injuries and performing below career norms. The cavernous dimensions of Citi Field were also blamed for an offensive power outage, as some of the Mets’ finest home run hitters struggled to put the ball in the seats. (Mets management has since pulled the fences in to help generate more home team offense.) Over time, the double smash burgers at the new stadium’s Shake Shack outpost garnered more attention than did the players on the field. Dejected fans left games early, more concerned with beating traffic than making it through another demoralizing ninth inning."

TAI’S TACO TRUCK

 New York Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker will be partnering with The New York Foundling (“The Foundling”) to give out free tacos to fans pregame on Friday, September 2 at Citi Field. Fans will have the opportunity to donate to The New York Foundling organization as Walker serves fans between 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

 

                        Since 2018, Walker and his wife have partnered with different foster care organizations as they have been closely connected to people who have been a part of the foster care system. The Foundling is one of New York City’s oldest and largest providers of foster care services. Their services are geared toward keeping children safe and helping youth in foster care return to their biological parents, remain with their extended family, or find a permanent home. The Foundling also provides an array of other resources that support the needs of children in foster care, including medical and mental health services, employment supports, and educational services.

 

                        Tai’s Taco Truck and representatives from The Foundling will be locatedoutside of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda entrance starting at 5:15 p.m., serving tacos (while supplies last) and collecting donations.

CITI MADE A DONATION TO NO KID HUNGRY PROGRAM

 

No Alumni hit a HR during Old Timer's Game but at least they got a donation going.

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 23, 2022 — The New York Mets today announced that in conjunction with the Citi Community Home Runs Program, Citi will donate $500 for each home run hit by a Mets alumni during the Old Timers’ Day Game on Saturday, August 27 at Citi Field. Citi will donate a minimum of $2,000 with the Mets matching the donation by Citi to No Kid Hungry.

No Kid Hungry New York Program Director Rachel Sabella will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Mets Old Timers’ Day Game.

As kids across America are preparing to head back to school this fall, as many as 1 in 6 children could be re-entering the classroom struggling with hunger. That’s why, now more than ever, the fight against childhood hunger is so important.

Since 2016, through the Citi Community Home Runs Program, Citi has donated over $1 million to No Kid Hungry — which can help provide 10 million meals.* For each Mets home run hit at Citi Field this season, Citi will continue to donate $2,000 to No Kid Hungry to help fight childhood hunger.

“We’re excited to extend the Citi Community Home Runs Program and donate to No Kid Hungry for each home run hit by a Mets alumni during the Old Timers’ Day Game,” said Ryan Djabbarah, Citi’s Head of Sponsorships, Entertainment & Experiential. “We’ll be cheering on the alumni because more home runs hit at Citi Field means more meals to help fight childhood hunger.”

The Mets announced that 65 former players and managers will be in attendance for Old Timers’ Day presented by Citi on August 27 prior to the 7:10 p.m. game vs. Colorado.

Eleven members of the Mets Hall of Fame (Ed Kranepool, Cleon Jones, Mookie Wilson, Keith Hernandez, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, John Franco, Mike Piazza, Jon Matlack, Ron Darling and Edgardo Alfonzo) will all be at Citi Field on August 27.

The introductions for the Old Timers’ Day Game presented by Citi will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the game. Single game tickets are available on Mets.com/tickets and gates will open at 3:30 p.m.
