Hey everyone. You all know that when the Mets do something boneheaded to the fans that I will kill them on it. You all also know when I feel the Mets are getting the short end of the stick by the fans that I'll stand up for them a bit too. There is a weird narrative that is happening on social media and I think it originated from an article in Newsday that the Mets canceled Amazin' Day for 2026. What everyone is getting wrong is that there was never one planned for this year. I am grabbing this quote from the Sports Business Journal.
The Mets “are not bringing back” the Amazin’ Day fan fest at Citi Field this year, according to Anthony Rieber of NEWSDAY. Last year, an “estimated 10,000 fans turned out to mingle with more than 50 former and current players,” plus owner Steve Cohen and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. The team has said that Amazin’ Day “would return in the future but was never expected to be an annual event.” It is much like how the Mets brought back a hugely successful Old-Timers’ Day in 2022 and then did not hold another one until 2025. The Mets say that the decision to not bring back Amazin’ Day in 2026 “was made in August and is not related to the club’s questionable offseason.” Longtime stars 1B Pete Alonso and P Edwin Diaz left as free agents and the Mets traded away LFs Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil. The Mets’ special events this year include a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 World Series-winning team and the team’s HOF induction ceremony for former MLBers Bobby Valentine, Carlos Beltran and Lee Mazzilli. The dates have not yet been announced by the team (NEWSDAY, 1/8).
I knew there wasn't going to be one by February of 2025. I have some connections that may or may not be associated with the Mets and not necessarily anyone from the Mets themselves and the rumors from them were that the Mets lost money on Amazin' Day due to the logistics of having it at Citi Field, flying in the players, hotels, players travel to Citi Field from the hotels, the per diem, the appearance fees, the consulting firm that they originally hired then fired for a significant amount of money, and other costs. I also had heard(again a rumor but I have some insight from folks) lot of the players/alumni didn't like how the event was run and were not happy with the event at all. So with all of that being known in February, there wasn't ever going to be an Amazin' Day this season even if they brought back Diaz, Alonso, McNeil, and Nimmo.
I am also going to put this out here, In 2023 one of the Cohen's family members bought a ticket to go to the QBC. The family member didn't realize a few of our volunteers knew who they were and introduced me to the Cohen family member. The Cohen family member was very impressed with the QBC and told me that they were shocked that the Mets and Steve and Alex didn't do anything with us and that we should be working with them. The family member was going to go talk to Steve and Alex and try to set up a meeting with us after taking my business card. I never heard anything until Amazin' Day 2025 was announced. Now what I think happened was that the family member went back to Steve and Alex and they thought the QBC is a great idea and they brought it in front of their "people". I surmise that their people figured that they would cut out the middle man(QBC) and do a fan fest themselves. Which is 10000000000 percent their right and the QBC and Amazin' Day were two similar but different events. That's a little bit behind the curtain there for you folks.
Do I think Amazin Day will return? I do. Is it going to be annual? I doubt it. But aren't you glad there is the QBC that is an annual event? Yes, I self plugged there.
Again, There never was going to be an Amaazin' Day this year and no the Mets didn't cancel it because of what is going on in the baseball side of operations.
