Vargas having surgery

So, while it is ironic that Vargas, the 35-year-old pitcher the Mets brought in to protect against injuries to the rest of their rotation, went down, adding to their corps of starters is proving to be the right move.
Zack Wheeler, who was upset at being the odd man out when Vargas was signed last month, is the Mets’ contingency plan, not that they would admit it Sunday.
Mickey Callaway said that instead of pitching Wheeler in a minor-league game Monday, as had been announced, they would have him simulate one inning and then make the Grapefruit League start on Thursday. That was Vargas’ last scheduled spring start.

MG- Good thing the Mets have all those pitchers eh? Funny thing he was brought in just in case one of the other pitchers didn't do well or got hurt in Spring training.

“He’s been tremendous, him and Plawecki, what great camps they’re having. He’s doing great,” Callaway said. “He’s been working really hard on his throwing. It paid off today. I thought he would have thrown out two. That one, the first one, the ball cut like 5 feet [allowing Cedric Mullins to swipe second]. The second one was right on the money [nailing Tim Beckham]. They were both in the 1.9 area and that’s a really good pop time for anybody.”
Callaway said he is “not sure” how the whole catcher thing will play out, but “we can put either one of them back there and feel totally comfortable.” And it will not be determined on righty or lefty opposing pitchers, more their style, the manager said. Well, d’Arnaud made his case Sunday. With bat and arm.
