Understanding Autographs vs. Inscriptions at Celebrity SigningsWhen attending a celebrity signing event or purchasing signed memorabilia, it's helpful to know the key terms.
Here's a clear breakdown of the difference between an autograph and an inscription:
What is an Autograph?
- An autograph is simply the celebrity's signature. It's the basic form of a signed item, where the celebrity writes their name (often in a stylized or recognizable way) on an item like a photo, poster, book, or jersey.
- It's typically quick and straightforward, focusing solely on the signature itself without any additional text.
- Example: If a celebrity like Tom Hanks signs a movie poster with just "Tom Hanks," that's a pure autograph.
What is an Inscription?
- An inscription goes a step further by including a personalized message or dedication along with the autograph. This could be a short note, quote, or greeting tailored to the recipient (or sometimes a generic one).
- It's more elaborate and can make the item feel unique or sentimental, but it often takes extra time for the celebrity to write.
- Example: On the same movie poster, an inscription might read "To Sarah, May the force be with you! Tom Hanks." Here, "To Sarah, May the force be with you!" is the inscription, and "Tom Hanks" is the autograph.
Key Differences
- Content: Autograph = Signature only. Inscription = Signature + a message.
- Personalization: Autographs are generally not personalized (though they can be), while inscriptions often include names, dates, or specific phrases to make them more special.
- Time and Availability: At signing events, autographs are faster to produce, so celebrities might limit inscriptions to avoid long lines. Some events or sellers charge extra for inscriptions or have rules about what can be inscribed (e.g., no offensive language).
- Value: In collectibles, an inscribed item can be more valuable if the message is meaningful or rare, but sometimes collectors prefer "clean" autographs without inscriptions for broader appeal.
If you're at a signing, always check the event guidelines—some celebrities allow requests for inscriptions, while others stick to autographs only. If you have a specific item or celebrity in mind, feel free to provide more details for tailored advice!

Since he is a former Met now here is the 2018 QBC: Brandon Nimmo Panel
At the 2018 QBC we were lucky to have two at the time Current Mets players, one was my buddy Chris Flexen and the other was Brandon Nimmo. At the time fans didn't know what kind of person/player Brandon is. The QBC attendees got to see a genuine, humble person that you could tell enjoyed being amongst the Mets fans.
Thanks for your time here Brandon and we were glad to be able to hang out with you and Chelsea at the QBC in 2018.
