Dominican baseball prospects to be treated by
No. 1 ranked hospital in the United States for orthopedics

NEW YORK (April 18, 2019) – The New York Mets have selected Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) as the Presenting Partner of the Mets Academy in the Dominican Republic.

This partnership with the Mets Academy will allow HSS to have full medical integration within the Dominican training facility over the next several years, which will include providing Latin American prospects with access to high quality preventative, surgical, rehabilitative, performance, and consulting services. Additionally, HSS will look to host educational workshops to medical professionals in the Dominican Republic as well as community and charitable events at the facility.

As the Mets Academy’s Presenting Partner, HSS will also receive branding within the training facility, which will be on display during the ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, April 22 at 11:30am.

“HSS has been a tremendous partner and supporter of all our health and performance programs for years and in addition to keeping our players healthy, they will join us in all our Dominican Academy community initiatives we participate in,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. “Our Academy is such an important part of our organization that it only makes sense for HSS to provide the same advantages to all our athletes in the Dominican Republic.”

“HSS has a long specialized history in working with high-performing athletes with our clinical expertise and sports medicine research, said David W. Altchek, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS and medical director of the Mets. “We have been providing day-to-day coverage for the Mets for more than 25 years, as well as assisting in the decision-making for each player’s course of care throughout the seasons, and now look forward to enabling baseball prospects in this region to maintain long and healthy careers.”

Built in 2008, the Mets Academy is dedicated to developing Latin American baseball prospects; both on and off the field. The training facility is home to 3 full baseball fields, a professional-grade clubhouse, along with full-serve practice facility including batting cages, pitching mounds, san track and swimming pool. Through different educational programs, the Mets not only support players to further refine their baseball techniques, but also provide them with workshops to learn English and opportunities to participate in community initiatives.
