 METS ACQUIRE MINOR LEAGUE OUTFIELDERS DREW GILBERT AND RYAN CLIFFORD FROM HOUSTON

FLUSHING, N.Y., AUGUST 1, 2023 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has acquired minor league outfielders Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford from the Houston Astros in exchange for RHP Justin Verlander and cash considerations.

 

Gilbert, 22, ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the Astros organization according to Baseball America and the 68th-best prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline. He was slotted as the 36th-best prospect in the majors according to theBaseball Prospectus mid-year ranking. Clifford, 20, was the No. 3 prospect in Houston’s system according to Baseball America and the No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. 

 

Gilbert was selected as the 28th overall pick in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee. In 81 games between High-A and Double-A this season, the left-handed hitter has hit .274 with 57 runs, 19 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 38 RBI, 10 steals with a .363 OBP and a .458 SLG. In 21 games before he was promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi, Gilbert batted .361 (31-86) with 21 runs, eight doubles, one triple, six home runs, 18 RBI, four steals with a .421 OBP and a .686 SLG. He represented the Astros in the 2023 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.

 

Clifford has appeared in 83 games this season between Class-A Fayetteville and High-A Ashville, batting .291/.399/.520 with 57 runs, 16 doubles, 18 home runs, 61 RBI with a .919 OPS. He was selected in the 11th round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of Crossroads FLEX High School in Cary, NC. In 108 minor league games, the left-handed hitter owns a .282/.405/.494 slashline with 21 doubles, 20 homers, 71 RBI and 70 runs scored.

 

Verlander signed with New York as a free agent last offseason. The three-time AL Cy Young Award winner made 16 starts for the Mets and went 6-5 with a 3.15 ERA (33 ER/94.1 IP) with 31 walks and 81 strikeouts.

Now that our Lunch with Howie Rose is over and a big success, it’s time to move onto QBC 2023. In 2013, Shannon Shark(Metspolice) and myself came up with the idea of trying to bluff the Wilpons into doing a Mets fan fest. It didn’t work. We then joined forces with Darren Meenan(The7Line) and really started the ball rolling on the QBC. Darren had to drop out as a primary member of the brain trust because he was in the process of legitimizing the7line with MLB but was still there to support the idea. Dan Twohig then slid into the three man team. We had a successful first QBC in 2014. 

So what am I getting at? It has been 10 years since the inception of the QBC being brought to life. That means we should try to have a pretty amazing QBC this year?

METS ACQUIRE MINOR LEAGUE RHP JUSTIN JARVIS

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 31, 2023 – The New York Mets tonight announced that the club has acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Justin Jarvis from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for OF Mark Canha and cash considerations. 

 

Jarvis, 23, is Milwaukee’s 12^th-best prospect inBaseball America’s midseason prospect rankings. The righty has made 17 starts between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville this season, going 6-6 with a 4.33 ERA (42 ER/87.1 IP) with 38 walks and 102 strikeouts. He has appeared in 90 games (76 starts) over his career and posting a 23-25 record with a 4.27 ERA (183 ER/385.1 IP) with 179 walks and 384 strikeouts.

 

The Brewers fifth round selection in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft was named as Milwaukee’s Minor League Pitcher of the Month in April after going 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA (4 ER/23.0IP), striking out 29 batters in the process. In 2022, Jarvis made 28 starts between High-A and Double-A going 11-9 with a 3.83 ERA (60 ER/141.0 IP) with 66 walks and 150 strikeouts. He was tied for second in strikeouts in the Midwest League (134), tied for second in wins (nine), third in ERA (4.02), fifth in opponents in batting average (.231) and fifth in WHIP (1.29).

 

Canha appeared in 229 games over two seasons with the Mets, slashing .259/.359/.395 with 59 extra-base hits, 90 RBI and a 115 OPS+.
