NEW YORK METS EXPAND FUN AT BAT PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL AND USA BASEBALL

The Mets are seeking 150 new school partners to help grow the game of baseball for youth in the community.

FLUSHING, N.Y., February 29, 2024 – The New York Mets, in partnership with Major League Baseball and USA Baseball, are expanding the Fun At Bat program in 2024. The Mets are seeking 150 new school partners across New York City and the Tri-State area, which would total over 150,000 youth reached since launching the program in September 2022.

The Amazin’ Mets Foundation supported the Fun At Bat program with a $29,000 grant to USA Baseball to fund the new 150 participating schools.

Fun At Bat brings young athletes a unique baseball and softball experience by exposing students to an introductory level of the game including fielding, throwing and batting. Developed by USA Baseball, the program also places an emphasis on character development, functional movement, literacy, active play and fun.

This free program is available to all schools throughout the New York City and Tri-State area for grades K-5. Participating schools will receive quality equipment, USA Baseball Championship Principle books, and other resources. Physical education teachers will also have access to free online courses, which assist in teaching the fundamentals of the program.

All qualifying K-5 school administrators and physical education teachers can learn more and apply for Fun At Bat by visitingMets.com/FunAtBat. Schools that have previously received the program prior to 2022 are eligible to re-apply.

MLBPA wants Uniform Changes

This might be the first time I can remember that the players union has gotten involved in jersey changes. These in my opinion are some of the worst looking and seemingly made jerseys I have ever seen and I am glad the players feel the same way.

From Bleacher Report

Fans and analysts aren't the only ones who think the MLB uniforms designed for the 2024 season are a problem.

MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark told reporters on Tuesday that players are "frustrated" with the uniforms, and they're hoping to get them fixed before the start of the regular season.

"We are on the phone with the requisite parties that are involved in making that decision because we aren't. We're trying to make sure our guys have what they need in the fashion that they need it. And it's reflective of what being a major-league ballplayer should be reflective of.

"It's an ongoing dialogue. Hopefully, we can get some things done over the course of the next six weeks of spring training. Because I'd hate to be in a place where we're still having conversations about some of the challenges we have in that regard once the lights come on."

METS SIGN RHP SHINTARO FUJINAMI

METS SIGN RHP SHINTARO FUJINAMI

FLUSHING, N.Y., February 14, 2024 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed RHP Shintaro Fujinami to a one-year contract. In a corresponding move, INF Ronny Mauricio has been transferred to the 60-Day IL.

The Osaka, Japan native appeared in 64 games (seven starts) last season between the Oakland A’s and Baltimore Orioles, the third-most among rookie pitchers. After going 5-8 with an 8.57 ERA (47 ER/49.1 IP) in 34 games (seven starts) with Oakland, Fujinami went 2-0 with a 4.85 ERA (16 ER/29.2 IP) and two saves over 30 games with Baltimore, exclusively as a reliever. The 6-6, 216-pounder threw 136 pitches of at least 100 MPH, the ninth-most in the majors in 2023.

“We are excited to bring Shintaro into the organization,” said Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. “He adds another power arm option to our pen and we’re looking forward to him continuing his progression as a major league pitcher.”

Prior to pitching in the majors, Fujinami spent 10 seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball with the Hanshin Tigers. He went 57-54 with a 3.41 ERA (377 ER/994.1 IP) in 189 career appearances (154 starts) with the Tigers and was named a NPB All-Star in each of his first four seasons from 2013-2016, earning All-Star Game MVP honors in 2015. In 2017, Fujinami pitched for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic.

Fujinami, 29, will become the 15th Japanese-born player to appear in at least one game for the Mets, the most by any major league team.
