QBC 2022: Pre-Announcement Announcement

Hey Folks.

What the heck is a pre-announcement announcement? It's me letting you know we will be having an announcement about location and date for  QBC 2022 either late in the day tomorrow Aug 1st or early  Tuesday Aug 2nd.

I'm not going to lie to you guys and say everything up to this point was easy. It is quite hard trying to find a nice sized venue so everyone isn't on top of each other. We also have to find a venue we can afford too. When I say afford, I mean, we don't want to have to raise ticket prices too much. As usual though prices for talent, venue, A/V, and any cool things we try add for the event do go up. We strive to give you guys the best bang for your buck and I think we still have the best prices for autographs. The thing is we aren't a "traditional card show" that folks are used to going to. We try to make the QBC a fun hang for our fellow Mets fans.

We are working on who we are bringing in talent wise right now and will probably have two- three folks who have played for the Mets.

Keep up to date with my blog here.

The Mets Pod: Episode 17

Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo preview the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline on Episode 17 of The Mets Pod! The guys welcome SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino to the show, as they look ahead to what should be an active time for the Mets as the team seeks to upgrade the roster before the Aug. 2nd deadline. The crew covers Juan Soto, Willson Contreras, Trey Mancini, J.D. Martinez and all the options to upgrade the offense.
Andy also sheds some light on the Mets’ strategy to improve the bullpen, potential deals including Dom Smith and J.D. Davis, and long-term plans for the starting rotation. Later in the show, Connor and Joe break down the Daniel Vogelbach trade, losing Colin Holderman, and some additional trade options for the Mets moving forward. Finally, the show wraps with the Mailbag, which brings questions about possible mid-tier prospects to trade and the current development status of top-level prospects Mark Vientos and Brett Baty.

AMAZIN’ METS FOUNDATION HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL HOMERUNS & HIGHBALLS FUNDRAISER

AMAZIN’ METS FOUNDATION HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL HOMERUNS & HIGHBALLS FUNDRAISER

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 28, 2022 – The Amazin’ Mets Foundation (AMF) hosted its second annual Homeruns & Highballs fundraiser on Monday, July 25 at Citi Field. As AMF’s largest fundraising event of the season, the event itself raised gross contributions of over $937,000 with Mets Owners Steve and Alex Cohen matching those proceeds through the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation.

“Steve and I are very grateful for the generous support of our second annual fundraiser benefiting the Amazin’ Mets Foundation,” said Mrs. Alex Cohen, President of the Amazin’ Mets Foundation. “The funds raised will help us continue to seek out the needs of our community and inspire others to give back so we can leave our communities and fans better off than when we got here.”

The philanthropic event was supported by the New York Mets organization. General Manager Billy Eppler, Manager Buck Showalter and the rest of the Mets coaching staff, the entire Mets roster, and Mets Alumni, including Mike Piazza, John Franco, Mookie Wilson and Todd Zeile, were all in attendance. Attendees enjoyed Citi Field culinary favorites, games and activities, a fireworks show, and chances to bid on unique memorabilia and experiences as part of the Amazin’ Auction.

In its inaugural year, AMF funded $1.6 million in grants for 60 different organizations. This season, the Foundation plans to fund over $2 million in grants to help those in need.

The Amazin’ Mets Foundation was founded in January 2021 as the philanthropic arm of the New York Mets organization. The Foundation is committed to providing needed services and opportunities to children, families and underserved groups in our neighborhoods and communities. Together we can inspire change and make a lasting impact on and off the field.

What happens when you build an arena in a neighborhood and don’t fulfill promises?

This is an interesting read about how developers promise something to the surrounding community to build a stadium or an arena.

But anyone who’s visited the Barclays Center can attest: there is no Urban Room at the site, despite a 2014 agreement between the developers and the state that set a hard deadline for its creation—along with a $10 million penalty if the owners failed to build it in time.

That deadline passed in May. Now, elected officials and community advocates are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul and Empire State Development, the state entity overseeing the project, to collect on those missed deadline fees. They say doing so is paramount to holding the developers accountable to their public promises—a sore spot when it comes to Atlantic Yards, where an original Community Benefits Agreement inked in 2005 that pledged jobs and affordable housing for the neighborhood was never sufficiently enforced.

 Read more here

Why is this interesting you might ask? Look over in Flushing and see what was promised by the developers like Sterling Equities to get the Iron Triangle property. Now with all the talk of a new soccer stadium and possible casino that Steve Cohen wants to build, where does that put the affordable housing, green space, and new infrastructure on the list of promises? Can a developer just pay a fine and it goes away? I’m not saying any of this is actually going to happen in Flushing but could it?

126th Street development taking shape?

From the NY Post.

Mayor Eric Adams is expected to announce that he is onboard with plans for a 25,000-seat soccer stadium to be built near Citi Field that will be home to the New York City Football Club, sources close to the situation said.

“A deal is close, but negotiations are ongoing,” a source said.

More from the NY Post

Sources told The Post that Cohen is ramping up efforts to partner with a casino operator and eyeing redevelopment prospects around Citi Field in Willets Point.

He also started vetting several casino owners for his license push over the last several weeks, working with investment bank Union Gaming to choose a partner.

Cohen is believed to favor Hard Rock – also a major donor to Gov. Kathy Hochul – a source close to the process said. He was also recently speaking to Sands Hotel and Casino, sources said.

I’m glad that they are finally looking to make the bigger moves on the Willets Point development front, but I want to know what about the affordable housing and the schools. When are they building them?

The Jackie Robinson Museum opens today?

Did anyone know the Jackie Robinson Museum was finally set to open today? I just happened to stumble upon it this morning on the way to work. It looks like the ribbon cutting ceremony is later today.

I’m just shocked that I didn’t hear about this unless my head has been in the sand. Am I the only one?

Below are the Mets’ 10 picks from day three of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft:

Monday, July 18, 2022

METS SELECT EIGHT PLAYERS ON DAY TWO OF 2022 DRAFT

METS SELECT EIGHT PLAYERS ON DAY TWO OF 2022 DRAFT

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 18, 2022 – The New York Mets today made eight selections in rounds 3-10 to complete day two of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft.

In the third round, the Mets selected Brandon Sproat, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Florida. Sproat, 21, went 9-4 over 17 games (16 starts) and pitched to a 3.41 ERA (34 earned runs/89.2 innings) with 82 strikeouts in 2022. In his final six starts, the Pace, FL, native went 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder pitched for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2021 and topped out at 99-100 MPH with his fastball. Sproat was previously drafted by the Texas Rangers in the seventh round of the 2019 First-Year Plyer Draft out of Pace High School (FL).

Jacob Reimer, a third baseman from Yucaipa (CA) High School, was the Mets’ fourth-round choice. Reimer, 18, is the highest draft pick from Yucaipa High School since current Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the supplemental first round (43rd overall) of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder was ranked as the 77th-best high school prospect and the ninth-best high school prospect from California by Perfect Game. Reimer competed at the 2021 Perfect Game National Showcase at Tropicana Field.

With their fifth-round pick, the Mets selected D’Andre Smith, a shortstop from USC. The Diamond Bar, CA, native batted .286 (60-210) with eight home runs, 23 RBI and was tied for the team lead with 40 runs in 2022. As a freshman at USC in 2021, Smith appeared in 13 games and posted a .341/.522/.526 slashline. Smith is the first USC infielder to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the First-Year Player Draft since Ricky Oropesa was drafted in the third round (116th overall) in 2011 by the San Francisco Giants.

New York took Tyler Stuart out of the University of Southern Mississippi in the sixth round. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound, right-handed pitcher made 22 appearances (four starts) and went 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA (15 earned runs/40.0 innings), 38 strikeouts and one save in 2022. In the Hattiesburg Regional, Stuart made three appearances and did not allow a run in 2.2 innings. Stuart missed his redshirt freshman season in 2020 after he underwent “Tommy John” surgery.

In the seventh round, the Mets selected Jonah Tong, a right-handed pitcher from Georgia Premier Academy in Statesboro, GA. Tong, 19, hails from Ontario, Canada, but spent the 2022 season pitching stateside. In seven games (five starts) with Georgia Premiere Academy, Tong went 4-2 with a 1.63 ERA (seven earned runs/30.0 innings) with 46 strikeouts and one complete game. Prior to pitching at Georgia Premier Academy, Tong attended Bill Crothers Secondary School in Canada. Tong was the fifth Canadian player selected in this year’s First-Year Player Draft.

With their eighth-round pick, the Mets took Dylan Tebrake, a right-handed pitcher from Creighton University (NE). Tebrake, 23, was named the Big East Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2021 and 2022. During those two seasons, Tebrake went 16-2 with a 2.82 ERA (52 earned runs/165.2 innings) with 190 strikeouts over 29 starts. His 115 strikeouts in 2022 were the fourth most by a Creighton pitcher in a single season. The two-time All-Big East First Team selection finished his career at Creighton with a record of 21-5, 230 strikeouts and a 2.86 ERA in 222.0 innings over four seasons.

Chase Estep, a third baseman from the University of Kentucky was New York’s ninth round pick. In 2022, Estep batted .302/.416/.560, drove in a team-high 49 RBI and tied for the team lead with 13 home runs and 16 stolen bases. Prior to the 2022 season, Estep hit one home run over his first three collegiate seasons. In the summer of 2021, Estep played for the Kenosha Kingfish of the Northwoods League and batted .294 (27-92) with an .833 OPS in 25 games. Estep’s uncle, Chris Estep, was a 12th-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates from Kentucky in the 1988 MLB June Amateur Draft. His father Chris played two seasons at Kentucky from 1992-1993.

The Mets’ final pick of day two of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft was Zebulon Vermillion, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas. In 24 relief appearances this past season, Vermillion went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA (seven earned runs/26.1 innings), 28 strikeouts and two saves. In four games during Arkansas’ run to the 2022 College World Series, Vermillion tossed 3.1 scoreless innings. The 6-5, 240-pounder finished his collegiate career with a record of 10-1 with a 3.58 ERA (42 innings/105.2 innings) and 100 strikeouts in 71 games (six starts).

New York will conclude its draft tomorrow with 10 more selections in rounds 11-20.

JUAN ALICEA PASSES AWAY

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 18, 2022 – Longtime Mets Spanish radio broadcaster and pioneer Juan Alicea passed away this morning peacefully in his sleep at his home in Florida. He was 85.

Alicea joined the organization in April of 1969 and served in a variety of capacities including scouting and community relations before finding his home in the Spanish broadcasting booth in 1982, where he remained through 2019.

Alicea was behind the mic for over 4,000 Mets games, including being the leading voice on the International Spanish Network during the 1986 postseason which aired throughout the United States and Latin America. Last year, the Mets named the Spanish Radio Booth at Citi Field in his honor.

“Juan was an innovator and pioneer in the Spanish broadcasting field as well as renowned and respected throughout the industry as an extraordinary broadcaster,” said Mets President Sandy Alderson. “He was instrumental in the creation of Hispanic Marketing, Promotions and Community Events. His 50 years of service made him a highly regarded member of the Mets family. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his son John and granddaughter Damiana.”

“Juan was a legendary figure on the Spanish Mets broadcasts,” said Tim Scheld, Brand Manager, WCBS 880. “We’ve been proud and honored to have worked alongside someone of such character, kindness and talent.”

“Juan was not only my role model, but a father figure as well,” said Mets Spanish radio broadcaster Max Perez Jimenez. “We have all lost a true master professor of baseball and all his teachings and wisdom will remain with me forever

I don't even know where to begin with this hat and how bad I feel this design is.I couldn't even tell that was a 2and a X under the crown and rose. That crown also looks just like a blob to me when you look at it from far away.  Yikes.

Padres Shirt even worse than the Mets shirt

Folks know I am not a fan of the LFGM rally cry. I just don't think the LGM needed to be changed and for it to be not family friendly. I do have to say this SD Padres shirt makes the LFGM shirt look good compared to it. I can't believe anyone thought that shirt was a good idea to purloin the the bad rally cry from the Mets and have it land in San Diego. At least the LFGM is kind of original.
