The Mets had a combined No Hitter last night

Congrats to the Mets for having their second no hitter in their team’s history last night. It took five pitchers to be able to claim their first combined no hitter in the game. Folks are going to get on my case about this but while this cool and I’m glad the Mets are winning games I don’t feel like this is special as when one pitcher goes the distance throwing a no hitter by himself.

Folks were telling last night that this is rarer and a much more difficult thing to do. “Only 17 of combined no hitters in league history vs over 300 one pitcher ones.” Of course this is going to be skewed like this. The league has been around for over 150 years and the combined no hitter has just recently become a thing with the way mangers are handling their starting pitchers now.

I side with Jerry Blevins on this. As a pitcher I take his thoughts on this with a little more weight than just a fans. Like I said, don’t get me wrong I love that the Mets won. Games in April and May matter. Wins matter.

I looked it up. Before 2010 there were 9 combined no hitters. So I around 140 years of baseball it wasn’t done often. They left the starting to pitcher in to make that moment in history. Since 2010 it has happened 8 times. Doesn’t that make it less rare and more of a norm?

I even made this comparison last night to a friend. A combined no hitter to me is like having five guys taking turns in eating a 100 oz steak in a contest. Yeah they finished it off but it’s not the same as one guy doing it.

This is all just my opinion on combined no hitters in general and I am not trying to take away from a moment that the Mets and their fans can hang their hats on for the season. God knows as Mets fans we aren’t used to things breaking the teams way.

Mets and players getting hit by pitches

Do the Mets have a target on their back throughout the league or is it that the baseballs being made by Rawlings who is owned by MLB suck? Some pitchers are saying that the balls have no grip to them and coupled with the climate the game they are pitching in creates a slick ball. Is this the case? Are the balls not being made right? Not being rubbed in right with that special dirt that’s brought in to be used? Are pitchers just throwing at the Mets because they are owned by Steve Cohen according to some speculation by the media? Is it because pitchers relied on sticky stuff for years and can’t throw without it?

Who thinks the Mets are getting thrown at because Steve Cohen owns them? Not me. I think that it’s a coincidence of a number of factors that’s going on. It’s the way the Mets are being pitched to, it’s the balls, and it’s pitchers having control issues.

Maybe MLB shouldn’t be in charge of making their own equipment. Maybe they have too much say in the matter if a ball is slicker, or is juiced, or is a dead ball. Maybe they need to make the ball a little stickier so there is more control for the pitcher or maybe they can find a better thing than just a Rosin bag to help a ball not be slippery. I don’t know.

I am so glad I gave up my Half Season Mets Ticket Plan years ago.

Let me mention this first. I do not have my Half Season ticket plan any more. When I did have it, I got annoyed having it for a few different reasons. One, even if you had two seats, you only got stuff usually for one out of the two seats. Another thing that annoyed me was folks around me getting discounted seats in my section and there was never a "make good" for the ticket plan holders with any kind of voucher for food, parking, or merchandise. The last thing that really set me off is that the Mets ticket office didn't seem like it cared about retaining fans but were always looking to get new fans with getting free authentic or replica jerseys or so and so perks. Myself and other plan holders would get so annoyed by this and I finally had enough of not feeling valued as a fan or a customer and decided just to keep my 7Line tickets and get rid of my other plan that I had for a decade. I was thinking that maybe with the new regime that would change. Nope.

I was talking to a friend yesterday about their ticket plans and now how that they don't know if they want to keep it anymore. The ticket rep they have can run hot or cold with the treatment of my friend and their account. It really just seems like the Mets ticket office just cares about getting their numbers they need for new tickets and I guess if they don't have the same goals to retain current customers. I really don't get how they can't do both. You have fans that have plans that came over from Shea and you can't treat them right? Come on.

I also love how I randomly will get a phone call from my "New Point of Contact" from the Mets to buy tickets through. "I'm calling to find out about your fandom." Usually after I bust out about the QBC, this blog, and that I am on the Mets Fan Advisory Board, I get a, "Woah. You really are a fan." And then I break down to them why I won't buy plans anymore. Between seats next to me seemingly bought by brokers and being resold or from what I heard that the Mets themselves might be selling their inventory on Stubhub(Hasn't been officially confirmed), to the deep discounts they give out with promotions over the season doesn't make me want to buy a plan again.

I have to tell you a few seasons ago, I saw how the box office thinks about fans they currently have locked up with plans and it made me not want to have my plan anymore. Hopefully the new starts to realize whats going on and they change the way the Box office does business.

Why do fans act like jerks?

I was just reading about what happened with the Yankees fans and the Cleveland Guardians players yesterday. I never can get why fans think they have the “right” to act this way at games. Just because you pay for a ticket it doesn’t mean you can throw things, flip off, curse at opposing players or even their own players. Whatever happened to knowing how to behave at sporting events, concerts, and movie theaters? Not only can you hurt a player with throwing stuff, you might hurt a fellow fan in front of you. Do you think they signed up to be pelted with things from some jerk three rows back when they bought their tickets? I am not going to condemn just Yankees fans on this but I am going to condemn all fans that do this type of behavior. Remember the Giants snowball/battery incident? That was dangerous as hell.

Fans just be better.

VACCINE FOR ALL: NYC TEST & TRACE CORPS AND THE NEW YORK METS CELEBRATE CITI FIELD VACCINE TEAM’S NEARLY 300,000 VACCINATIONS

Tonight’s Citi Field Vaccination Team Appreciation Game will honor the work of the Citi Field vaccine staff, who provided the most vaccinations of any City-run site

image002.jpg

(New York, NY – April 20, 2022) The New York City Test & Trace Corps and New York Mets President Sandy Alderson announced today that the Citi Field vaccination site has administered nearly 300,000 vaccinations, the most of any New York City-run site. To celebrate the NYC Test & Trace Corps’ critical work, the New York Mets will host a Citi Field Vaccination Team Appreciation Game when they face the San Francisco Giants tonight at 7 p.m.

“The healthcare heroes at the Citi Field vaccination site stepped up to the plate to lead New York City’s vaccine efforts, which have provided 97 percent of the city’s adults with at least one dose of the vaccine,” said New York CityMayor Adams. “Thanks to their tireless efforts, and the willingness of so many New Yorkers to protect themselves and their communities by getting vaccinated, we can safely get back to our ballparks and other venues that make New York City great.”

“We’re thrilled to have worked with all our elected officials, the NYC Test & Trace Corps and first responders in making Citi Field a primary vaccination destination that’s had a significant impact in New York’s recovery from COVID,” said Mets Owner, Chairman and CEO Steve Cohen. “Assisting and promoting the health and safety of our communities is a responsibility our organization takes very seriously, and we are grateful for all the collaboration with the many heroes that help keep us safe.”

“Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are safer today because of the staff at our Citi Field vaccination site, who provided round-the-clock access for anyone to walk in or make an appointment and receive the life-saving protection of a COVID vaccine,” said Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at New York City Health + Hospitals and NYC Test & Trace Corps Executive Director Dr. Ted Long. “We are entering the late innings of the pandemic and, thanks to vaccines, have the tools we need to win. I urge New Yorkers who are still unvaccinated or those who are eligible for boosters to keep their eye on the ball and get those shots today.”

The NYC Test & Trace Corps in partnership with the New York Mets opened the Citi Field mass vaccination site in February 2021 to provide 24/7 vaccination access to New Yorkers and residents of Queens. At its peak, the site vaccinated an average of 1,200 New Yorkers per day. The mass vaccination site closed in early March, and continued to provide vaccinations from two mobile vaccination units stationed dedicatedly at the same location until April 9.

Since the opening of the Citi Field vaccination site, a total of 292,727 vaccinations have been administered to 161,669 people, including over 150,000 New Yorkers. There have been 22 days when the site has vaccinated over 2,000 New Yorkers, with a single day peak of 2,501 vaccinated on April 19, 2021.

Residents of Queens comprised 87% of first and second dose vaccinations given at Citi Field. 38% of recipients were Latino New Yorkers and 31% were Asian New Yorkers. Nearly 29% of vaccination recipients were walk-ins.

The Mets prepared a commemorative video to honor the work the Citi Field vaccination team has done and celebrate the site’s tremendous and critical success. The video will be played on the stadium’s jumbotron at 6:50 p.m. prior to the ceremonial first pitch.

The first pitch of the Citi Field Vaccination Team Appreciation Game will be thrown by Shifra Goldenberg, the NYC Test & Trace Corps’ Senior Manager of Site and Service Implementation.

“The staff at Citi Field were there for their fellow New Yorkers right off the bat, working at all hours of the day, seven days a week, to provide over a year of constant, convenient access to vaccinations,” said Shifra Goldenberg, NYC Test & Trace Corps Senior Manager of Site and Service Implementation and Director of Implementation for the Office of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at NYC Health + Hospitals. “Their dedication to this critical mission made Citi a trusted destination for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. The countless thank you messages they left upon our Vaccine Gratitude Wall rallied us forward, reminding us of the people we helped day after day.”

Patients leave thank you messages and acknowledgments for healthcare workers on Citi Field’s Vaccine Gratitude Wall.

New Yorkers ages 12 and up can make an appointment at nyc.gov/vaccinefinder or by calling 877-VAX-4NYC. If you are interested in receiving the vaccine in the comfort of your home, please register here or call 1-877-VAX-4NYC to arrange an appointment.

Citi Field to add sensory Nook

Citi Field, Home of the New York Mets, is Latest Venue to Add Sensory Nook

to Address Comfort of Neurodiverse Guests

When the New York Mets need a break, they head to the dugout to relax, rewind and strategize for the next inning of the baseball game. It is the team’s oasis and place to regroup.

A new “dugout” has arrived at Citi Field, the Sensory Nook, this one designed to help those with autism, ADHD and dyslexia escape from the overstimulation that can occur at major sporting events. While everyone enjoys the crack of the bat and excitement of a game at Citi Field, it can be overwhelming for some guests.

The Sensory Nook was installed Monday in the concourse of the stadium. The Sensory Nook is an amenity of Citi Field that is a free to use by any guest who needs a break from the excitement of the action on the diamond.

We take a lot of pride in offering a safe place for all of our fans at Citi Field,” said Mets President Sandy Alderson. We are thrilled to include this service and that the Sensory Nook will provide an opportunity for those who wish to use it.”

Sensory Nook is a specialized version of Nook, a product originally designed for the office to create an emotionally intelligent workspace for one-to-one and small group tasks. Its designers found that adding a few important enhancements can help create a space that can positively influence mood, reduce challenging behavior and lower anxiety levels.

While the Nook is an emotionally intelligent workspace for one to one and group working, Sensory Nook enhancements can take it a step further,” said Nook designer and company founder David OCoimin. They create an encapsulated environment to positively influence mood, reduce challenging behavior and lower anxiety levels. It provides a calming refuge for social and emotional challenges. Sensory Nook is a practical way to reduce exclusion in the workspace, classroom and in public and it helps neurodiverse people cope with challenging environments and reduce anxiety.”

Sensory Nook was designed specifically with neurodiversity in mind. It is a highly inclusive adaptable space particularly effective to address neurodiversity including autism, ADHD and dyslexia. It provides a calming refuge for social and emotional challenges and is a practical way to reduce exclusion in public, workplaces and classrooms.

Sensory Nook is being installed in a number of stadiums around North America and the world. In addition to Citi Field, Sensory Nooks can be found at Allegiant Stadium host of this year’s Pro Bowl and the site of Super Bowl LVIII in 2024. Sensory Nooks are also being considered for stadiums in other Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and National Football League markets as well as several Big Ten stadiums.

In addition to sporting venues, Sensory Nooks are already helping visitors to airports, Autism Centers, corporate campuses and schools across the country and around the world.

Nook is a Certified Autism Resource, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), a body that delivers the global standard for training and certification in the areas of autism and other cognitive disorders.

“The prevalent one-size-fits-all’ nature of much of todays environments is unsuited to many people. Everybody is to some extent differently abled – ways of thinking and operating differ from one person to the next. This neurodiversity cannot be shoehorned into one type of space,” added O’Coimin.
